ABOUT DR T'S MANDATE

Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, like other Independent Human Rights Experts appointed by the Human Rights Council are non-paid and elected for 3-year mandates that can be reconducted for another three years.

In its resolution 5/1 and 16/21, the Human Rights Council clarified the parameters related to the selection and appointment of Special Procedures mandate-holders.

They undertake to uphold independence, efficiency, competence and integrity through probity, impartiality, honesty and good faith. They are not United Nations staff members and do not receive financial remuneration.

Activities of the Special Rapporteur

The Special Rapporteur implements the mandate through different means and activities, including:

  • Presenting annual reports to the Human Rights Council and to the General Assembly on the activities and studies undertaken in the view of the implementation of the mandate (see annual thematic reports);
  • Monitoring the situation of the right to health throughout the world;
  • Identifying trends related to the right to physical and mental health;
  • Undertaking country visits to get a first-hand account of the situation concerning the right to health in a specific country (see country visits);
  • Communicating with States and other concerned parties regarding alleged cases of violations of the right to health and other issues related to the mandate; and
  • Promoting the full realization of the right to health through dialogue with relevant actors by participating in seminars, conferences and expert meetings.
