
THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR
DR TLALENG MOFOKENG
Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, aka Dr. T, was appointed the UN Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, by the human rights council at its fourty-fourth session in July 2020.
At the annual meeting of special procedures mandate holders in June 2022 she was elected Chair of the Coordination Committee 2022/2023.
She holds a medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, a diploma in somatology, a diploma in aesthetic medicine, a postgraduate certificate in health economics and policy from the London School of Economics, and she completed the Peace Mediation Course by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). She is Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University, Distinguished Lecturer at O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and Co-chair O’Neill-Lancet Commission on Racism, Structural Discrimination and Global Health.
Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng holds several advisory roles and a member of several boards including being the Chair of the Soul City Institute for Social Justice and SWEAT. Her areas of impact in her role as special rapporteur on the right to health have been strategic litigation, legislative and policy frameworks, health systems and clinical care management, human rights standards setting, contribution to governmental and judicial processes, continued medical education and training, and advocacy.
Dr. T, is a globally renowned doctor and thought leader and named BBC Top 100 Woman 2021. Dr. T is widely published and is a bestselling author of “Dr T: A Guide to Sexual Health and Pleasure”. Dr T is a broadcaster, producer and host of various local and international TV shows.
She is an advocate for human rights based approaches to sexual and reproductive health with experience in teaching, legislative reform, policy, healthcare service provision, communication and broadcasting.
She has been Commissioner at the Commission for Gender Equality in South Africa. She has briefed the United States Senate congressional staff on the impact of the Global Gag Rule globally and in the region.
She has worked as a medical paractitioner in various clinical settings and has appeared as amicus curiae in many jurisdictions accross the world.
